Takeaways, restaurants and pubs: every English district counted

How many takeaways, restaurants and pubs each English district has, from the Food Standards Agency's register — the statutory list every food business must join. 43,912 takeaways and 98,679 restaurants and cafés across 264 districts.

Why these counts hold up. Registration with the local authority is a legal requirement for food businesses, so this is the full population of them, not a sample or a scrape. Counts as of July 2026; the register changes daily as businesses open and close. Pubs here means the register's pub/bar/nightclub category. Sources & method.

What the pattern shows, and what it doesn't

The takeaway-to-restaurant ratio tends to rise with deprivation: across all 264 districts the correlation with the index of multiple deprivation is moderate (r ≈ 0.53), and the most deprived fifth of districts averages roughly double the ratio of the least deprived fifth.

The exceptions are the interesting part. Newcastle-under-Lyme has England's highest ratio on below-average deprivation. Westminster has one of the lowest ratios on middling deprivation, because central London's 3,504 restaurants serve visitors and workers, not just residents. The ratio describes places; it doesn't diagnose them.
